Children do not have right information because parents do not have financial literacy

Submitted by Kerie Miller on Wed, 2010-07-28 04:11

For a personal financial education, do children have anybody but their parents to teach them? And what are they learning? Parents are the people who taught most children their personal finance skills according to a survey. The kids in that exact same survey have financial grades that hit rock bottom. Schools could possibly be the ones responsible for teaching personal finance literacy according to some. If parents are willing to put in the effort, it is easy for them to teach their children the personal financial literacy they should know.

Tendering process increasingly bypassing architects

Submitted by Jim Ilkay on Thu, 2009-12-17 12:26

Just read this article on Journal of Commerce: http://www.dcnonl.com/article/id36777

Public owners are exerting greater control over the tendering process, citing the need for greater transparency and accountability. The architecture community, who have traditionally provided this service, feel they have the skill and tools to perform this service, and that the shift in responsibility may be driven by owners' desire to cut fees.

Small is beautiful (maybe)

Submitted by Jim Ilkay on Fri, 2009-10-09 09:24

I had an interesting conversation yesterday with a fellow who heads up construction for a property developer. The discussion worked its way to the process by which they put projects out for bid, and more specifically the trade-off between increasing coverage (and presumably competition) and the effort involved with evaluating more bids and bidders. My friend said he generally prefers inviting a small group of proven suppliers, rather than exposing their projects more broadly. He felt the cost of evaluating more bids and bidders, and the risk of contracting with a unknown vendor, would wipe out any savings that might result from a more competitive bidding process. He is, however, worried about keeping his suppliers competitive, and not just in terms of price. He's also concerned about innovation.

Healing eHealth Ontario

Submitted by Jim Ilkay on Thu, 2009-10-08 12:47

As the situation at eHealth unwinds in the media, it’s apparent that the process by which large, complex public projects are procured and delivered is less than ideal. Understandably, the public is frustrated by what appears to be massive waste at a time of ballooning government deficits. No doubt people will be held accountable, but this problem has been building for some time and likely predates their involvement. We need to get beyond the politics and examine the range of root causes, big and small, before lasting change can occur.

What makes a successful conference?

Submitted by Clifford Ilkay on Mon, 2009-09-28 09:49

There are a host of factors that all contribute to a successful conference. In no particular order and by no means exhaustive, they are:

  • a coherent and focused program,
  • top-notch speakers,
  • a venue that is conducive to "connecting, sharing, learning",
  • reasonable and easy-to-understand pricing,
  • great food,
  • paying attention to the "spaces between sessions" as well as the sessions,

Changing the Face of Public Procurement Conferences

Submitted by Clifford Ilkay on Mon, 2009-08-10 17:34

I started organizing conferences in 2000 because the I.T. conferences I was attending left much to be desired. They were formulaic, boring, and ultimately, didn't provide good value for money. Having attended and spoken at numerous conferences by then, I knew what I did not like and like any entrepreneur who gets bitten by the "I can do it better." bug, I knew exactly what I would like in a conference.
